Obituary of John H. Hunter
John "Jack" Hamilton Hunter, age 90, of Branchport, NY passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital.
Jack was born in Clifton Springs, NY on April 17th, 1933, the son of the late Carl and Alice Hunter. He earned a BS in Physical Education at Springfield College, and an MS in Physical Education at University of Illinois. He spent most of his teaching career at Penfield High School before retiring in 1990. He was a dedicated PE teacher and while he coached multiple sports teams, he especially loved his many years coaching both boys and girls volleyball teams. His successful coaching career culminated with his induction in 2013 to the Amateur Coaches Walk of Fame at Frontier Stadium. Jack married Sally Marie Herman on September 30th, 1972. They enjoyed spending time having fun with family and friends, and once retired, living on Keuka lake, traveling and spending the winter months in Florida until he lost her to illness in 2018. Jack also loved fishing and woodworking (Intarcia). He was an accomplished carpenter who built the house on Keuka Lake where he called home.
Jack is survived by his son, Michael Hunter of Canandaigua, daughters, Kelly (Ted) Bedell of Maryland and Karin (Tom) Reynolds of Virginia; Thirteen Grandchildren; six Great Grandchildren; and brother, Bill (Doris) Hunter of Clifton Springs. In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his wife, Sally (Herman) Hunter in 2018; son, Kevin Paul Hunter in 1989; and sister, Barb (Jack) Feeney.
A Celebration of Jack's Life will be held on January 27, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 at Silverbird Restaurant (133 East Elm St., Penn Yan). Memories of Jack may be shared with his family and friends at townsendwoodzinger.com
