Obituary of Grace K. Coombs

Grace Kennedy Coombs, 96, died Friday, May 3, 2024 at the Friendly Home in Rochester, NY, after a prolonged illness. She was born on June 19, 1927 in Pulteney, NY, the daughter of the late Joe and Ellen Kennedy and graduated from the Franklin Academy and Prattsburgh Central School and completed a course of study at the Rochester Business Institute.

Grace was married to Alan (Al) Coombs on October 4, 1947 at the Pulteney Presbyterian Church and resided in Prattsburgh, NY.

She was Secretary of the Prattsburgh Central School and Treasurer of the Board of Education, co-owner and operator of Coombs Service, Inc. (an Agway store) with her husband, Al, and worked at the Steuben County Social Services and the Steuben County Infirmary.

Grace and Al loved dancing, belonging at one time to three ball room dance clubs, one of which they helped start. They traveled to Europe and Africa and, with their pickup camper, all over the Eastern Seaboard.

Over the years, Grace was an active member of the Prattsburgh Grange, Prattsburgh United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Prattsburgh Senior Citizens.

She was a dedicated homemaker and loved to bake, a talent she has passed along to her great grandchildren. She was the go-to person for cakes and giant chocolate cookies.

Grace is predeceased by her husband, Al, two sons Gary and James Coombs, siblings Thelma, Phyllis, Laurence and Joe.

She is survived by siblings: Josephine Thompson of Potter, NY and David Kennedy (Ruth) of Pulteney, son: Robert Coombs (Teresa) of Penfield, NY, 5 grandchildren: Grace Coombs Bassallo (Renato) of Lancaster, PA, Maria Elena Coombs Ricciardi (Mark) of Wellington, FL, Pilar Coombs of Orlando, FL, Martin Coombs (Jennifer) of Grand Island, NY, and Ana (Coombs) Brightful (Jason) of Brighton, NY, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandsons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Calling hours will be held from 10:30 am to 11:30 am on Friday, May 10, 2024 at the Prattsburgh Presbyterian Church, 1 Church St., Prattsburgh, NY with the funeral service immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
