Obituary of David J. Schiek
David F. Schiek, age 67, of Penn Yan, NY passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024. He was born November 9, 1957 at Penn Yan Soldiers & Sailors Hospital to Robert and Ida (Boyce) Schiek.
David graduated from Penn Yan Central School in 1976, where he played many sports, including track and field, basketball and football. He then continued his education at Oswego State, earning a Bachelors and Masters degree in the field of Industrial Arts education. David's work life began on his home farm, then as a draftsman and metal fabricator at Vance Metal in Geneva, NY. The latter half of his career was spent as a technology teacher for the Penn Yan School District, where he also assisted in student stage productions for many years. David was proud of his teaching career, and the addition of his name to the list of 'Who's Who Among Teachers' in New York State.
David also had a passion for maple syrup, being a 3rd-generation maple producer. Growing up, David followed behind his grandfather Frank and his own father to learn the maple syrup trade. He sold his products at markets throughout New York, including the Windmill, the New York State and Erie County fairs. David was also very involved in the Sampson Theatre/PYTCo, as well as stage production throughout the local area, providing the sound system for the Buckwheat Festival and Yates Co. Fair, as well as providing DJ services for school dances, receptions and other events. He was also known as a lover of dogs and was often found with a farm dog next to him in the truck, or trotting along by his side. He cherished spending time with his nieces and nephews, all of whom brought to his life much joy and laughter. He also thoroughly enjoyed visiting with people; if you really knew David Schiek, you had a friend for life.
He is survived by his sister, Penny Schiek or Queensbury, NY; brother, Ronald (Bambi) Schiek of Penn Yan, NY; nephews, David (Nicole) Schiek and Jeffrey (Rachel) Schiek; a niece, Kaitlyn (Zach) Levanduski; great-niece, Evelyn Schiek; and great-nephews, Carson Schiek and Riley Levanduski, all of Penn Yan, NY. David was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Ida (Boyce) Schiek.
Calling hours will take place from 2:00-4:00 pm on Friday, December 13, 2024 at the Penn Yan United Methodist Church, 166 Main Street, Penn Yan, NY. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 pm at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Keuka Comfort Care Home, 35 State Route 54, Penn Yan, NY 14527 or to Sampson Theatre/PYTCo, 130 East Elm St. Penn Yan, NY 14527.
