He was born in Highland Park, Michigan on July 5, 1943, the son of the late Howard C. and Mabel L. Oben. Corning, New York became home for much of his childhood in which he shared many fond memories.
Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife, friend and companion, Beverly J. Oben, on October 20, 2021. Graduating from Purdue University and a mechanical engineer by profession, Bill spent much of his career at Eastman Kodak before retiring to embrace life with passion and purpose. He served as president and member of the Keuka Lake Association for many years and was deeply committed to preserving the history and culture of the Finger Lakes region. A skilled craftsman and historian, Bill authored numerous articles and books exploring the history, restoration, and craftsmanship of wooden boats in the Finger Lakes. His dedication to this work extended to co-founding the Finger Lakes Boating Museum.

He was known not only for sharing stories of hobbies and life, but also for his genuine interest in hearing the stories of others. His warmth and curiosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
