Obituary of Marilyn Lilyea Matteson Fitch

Marilyn, age 94, died on April 24, 2022 at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home. Marilyn was born on July 27,1927 to Oscar W. and Helen Riker Lilyea in Dresden, NY. She attended Penn Yan Academy. She worked as a telephone operator in Geneva during the later years of WWII. She married Arol L. Matteson in 1945, and became a lifelong resident of Penn Yan. In 1991, she married Herbert T. Fitch. In 1961, she began as secretary for the First Presbyterian Church of Penn Yan, and remained there for over 56 years. She was an avid reader, and loved music, and sang in the church choir for many years. Her baking expertise was much appreciated by all her friends and famiy. Marilyn is survived by her brother, Warren (Francine) Lilyea of Oceanside, CA, her son, Steven (Janice Mahon) Matteson of Penn Yan and her daughter, Susan (Greg Wayand) Matteson of Carlisle, PA. Also, by H. Taylor (Lyn)Fitch of Penn Yan and Lois (Peter)Hatch of North Liberty, IA and by their children and grandchildren. Marilyn is also survived by her Grandchildren, Lindsey (Adam) Chapman, Justin (Cynthia) Matteson, and Karla (Chris Marasco) Matteson. Her Great-Grandchildren are Cary Cummings IV, Quinn Vadeboncoeur, and Joshua Matteson. Her Great-Great Granddaughter is Iliana Cummings. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Marilyn was predeceased by her sister, June Sutherland of Houston, TX, her first husband, Arol L. Matteson in 1983, and her second husband, Herbert T. Fitch in 2006. Please join the family for a Memorial Service in her honor on May 14, 2022 at The First Presbyterian Church, 211 Main Street, Penn Yan. Calling hours will begin at noon, followed by the Memorial Service at 1:00. All are invited to attend a reception in Crosier Hall at the Church immediately following. Please consider a donation in Marilyn's memory to the Memorial Fund at the Church, rather than flowers. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the wonderful care Marilyn received from the entire staff at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home. The family requests that everyone attending please wear masks for Marilyn's services.
